We have worked with some experts on wine to put together an amazing wine list for you to enjoy. As well as favourites from around the world, we have a special selection of fantastic wines from Lebanon.
Lebanon has been producing wine for thousands of years — in the Bekaa Valley there is even an intact second-century temple to Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. The country’s dry, sunny climate is ideal for grape growing, and it remains one of the oldest wine-making regions in the world.
The terroir
The secret is in the quality of the grapes the region is able to offer. The vineyards are planted at around 850 metres in a protected microclimate: Mount Lebanon shields the vines from the humid Mediterranean air while the Anti-Lebanon range protects them from the desert climate to the east. The terrain of rock and clay delays evaporation and retains moisture, so the roots grow long. After the winter snows — around 750mm of rain — come three seasons of sun and very little rain, giving the grapes a remarkable freshness, taste and scent.
Indigenous grapes
Lebanese wine is very much influenced by the French wineries, where many winemakers serve their apprenticeship before returning home. Although French grape varieties are popular, there are indigenous varieties such as Obeideh and Merwah — indeed, it is believed the Semillon grape is descended from Merwah. These varieties are grown only in Lebanon, and we are fortunate to showcase wines unique to this region.
